The client is a leading Australian online advertising and marketing organisation.

As a company with customers all over Australia, they have a large pool of sales representatives who travel to regional and rural locations to sell advertising space. An important part of this job is processing sales into a central CRM system.

This task requires network connectivity, often over limited bandwidth, in challenging remote environments like caravan parks and motel rooms.

O2 Networks were already providing the client with a "network in a box" solution offering instant remote access to the WAN. This solution had been working well, until the client deployed a new CRM application.

This application had cost the client millions of dollars. Unfortunately, it proved to be performing poorly over WAN links. Sales reps who had already waited patiently during application development started falling behind in their work. Many of them reverted to pen and paper, eroding sales performance capability. This was a business-critical problem, and no immediate application fix could be offered to solve it.

Our solution: Riverbed Steelhead WAN Acceleration

Fortunately, this organisation had an existing relationship with O2 Networks. We suggested to them that application performance might improve using WAN Acceleration technology to decrease bandwidth requirements and dramatically optimise the application.

The organisation readily agreed to let us see how we could help. We started by performing a Riverbed Cascade analysis on the network environment to profile the application and pinpoint the performance issues.

From this analysis it was evident that WAN Acceleration could indeed help. We obtained the client's approval to implement a pilot project at a sample site.

Our solution consisted of:

  • Riverbed Steelhead WAN Acceleration
  • Riverbed Steelhead Mobile Controller (SMC) laptop software

The results: 300% performance improvement, happy sales reps

The pilot was enormously successful. The application performance went through the roof. As one happy user reported:

"The speed has increased to the point where we are no longer patiently waiting for data to download. It just happens in seconds."

The project has now been implemented at all remote offices, has been extended to users working from home, and is now being rolled out to the client's regional corporate offices.

The client recuperated their investment within months and has reported performance improvements of over 300%. The application itself is running over 200 times faster. Just as importantly, the sales team is now happy and productive again.
