About Riverbed

Riverbed Technology is a designer and manufacturer of WAN optimization and network traffic measurement products.

In January 2009, Riverbed acquired Mazu Networks, developers of appliances to measure application usage and performance, and renamed the product to Cascade. WAN Optimization – Appliances

• The Steelhead appliance combines the techniques of data reduction, TCP acceleration and application layer protocol latency optimisations. The models of Steelhead appliances range from desktop and 1RU rack models for small to medium offices and data centers to 1RU and 3RU models for large offices and data centers.
• The Central Management Console is a management and monitoring system for the Steelhead appliances.
• The Interceptor appliance has been developed to take advantage of the features of clustering and redirection of traffic towards Steelhead appliances.
• The Steelhead Mobile software is designed to run on individual computers without the need for a Steelhead appliance, but with the capability of exchanging information with a possible local Steelhead appliance to get optimization from both sources.
• The WhiteWater appliance is designed for optimization towards cloud storage providers like Amazon S3.

WAN Optimization – Virtualisation

• The Riverbed Service Platform is a VMware based virtualization platform designed to be integrated in on the Steelhead appliances. It can act out-of-path as a normal host on the LAN, or in-path where the data is redirected to the virtual host before or after the optimization part is done.
• The Virtual Steelhead is a VMware host image based on the Steelhead appliance, to be used in places where there is no option for a physical appliance.
• The Cloud Steelhead software is a virtual Steelhead appliance for in Cloud based services like the Amazon Web Services EC2 and Virtual Private Clouds.
• The Steelhead Mobile software and the Central Management Console are also available as VMware images.

Network and Application Performance Measuring and Monitoring

• The Cascade Profiler appliance is a NetFlow based solution for network and application performance measuring and monitoring.
• The Cascade Shark appliance and Cascade Pilot software are the former CACE Shark appliance and Pilot software. They provide the network appliances which capture the traffic over a link and the software to visualize and analyze the traffic. The Cascade Pilot software has Wireshark integrated as part of its analysis capabilities.
